Rafael Camara might not be a household name yet, but he's quickly becoming the talk of the F1 paddock. The young Ferrari protege is emerging as the frontrunner for a Haas seat in 2027, potentially replacing Esteban Ocon. His impressive Formula 2 season has many believing he's ready for the big leagues.
In an exclusive interview with The Race in Baku, Camara showed his humble yet determined personality. On track, he transforms into a ruthless driver with incredible raw speed. His F2 qualifying averages speak volumes; he's consistently ahead of rivals, with only Alex Dunne coming close.
Camara's natural speed was evident even in Formula 3. In 2025, he secured four poles in the first five feature races, a feat reminiscent of Oscar Piastri. No wonder his Invicta F2 team, which previously nurtured champions like Gabriel Bortoleto and Leonardo Fornaroli, was immediately impressed.
"The speed is just incredible. I've never met a driver who is so naturally talented as he is. He has a feeling for the tyres I've never seen before. It's so natural," said James Robinson, Invicta F2 team boss, to The Race.
However, Camara is not the finished article. Like Ollie Bearman, the last Ferrari junior to graduate to F1 (and ironically his likely 2027 teammate), Camara still has rough edges in his racecraft. Mistakes in Montreal and Monaco show he still needs to learn to control his aggression.
Nevertheless, his potential has caught Haas's attention. With Ocon's seat likely vacant in 2027, Camara is the favourite. If he can maintain his performance and reduce errors, an F1 promotion is just a matter of time.
For F1 fans, the name Rafael Camara is one to watch. He could be the next Brazilian sensation, following in the footsteps of Ayrton Senna. Meanwhile, Haas seems to be preparing for the future with young talent.
