Jan Przyrowski secured a commanding maiden Formula Regional Europe victory at Hockenheim, but his win was overshadowed by a first-corner incident that eliminated title rivals Sebastian Wheldon and Emanuele Olivieri.
The collision occurred at the start when Sebastian Wheldon, starting from pole, was challenged by Olivieri on the outside. The two made contact, spinning Olivieri into retirement and dropping Wheldon to the back of the field. Stewards deemed Wheldon wholly responsible, handing him a 10-second penalty and two licence points.
Przyrowski, who had to take to the run-off to avoid the melee, emerged unscathed and quickly asserted his authority. "I knew what to do and I didn't make any mistakes," he said after the race.
The victory marked a historic moment for RPM, who joined FREC in 2022. Przyrowski expressed his delight: "It is a great milestone for the team and I am happy to be their first winner."
The race was neutralised by a safety car following the incident. After the restart, Przyrowski was followed by Kean Nakamura-Berta, who drove impressively from fifth. However, the Polish driver managed his tyres and his lead calmly to the flag.
Alexandre Munoz, who had been running third, ran wide at Turn 1 on lap seven, dropping to 13th. This promoted Tomass Stolcermanis back into the top three, but misfortune struck the Latvian as he was forced to pit two laps from the end. Al Dhaheri inherited the final podium spot, securing the teams' title for R-ace GP.
With this result, the championship battle intensifies. Wheldon, who finished outside the points, will serve his penalty in the next race, while Olivieri faces a bitter retirement. Przyrowski and RPM now carry momentum into the remainder of the season.
