Pol Espargaro returns to the MotoGP grid this weekend at Spielberg, Austria, filling in for Maverick Vinales who is still recovering. The KTM rider shared his views on Marc Marquez's incredible form and Aprilia's championship chances. In a pre-event interview for the Austrian GP, Espargaro did not hesitate to say that stopping Marquez right now is an extremely tough task.
“I look more at the dynamics behind the results, not just the results themselves,” Espargaro said. “At the beginning of the season, it wasn't Marco leading, but Aprilia performing incredibly and being unstoppable. Marc is now in that winning dynamic that evolves spectacularly, even at circuits that are difficult for him like Misano. He achieved results that shouldn't have been possible, and unfortunately for the others, this trend continues.”
When asked if it's harder to take the title from Marc Marquez than any other rider, Espargaro was clear. “Of course. We also have to consider Marco's condition at the start of the season, where he wasn't getting results because his injury wasn't fully healed and he had to undergo surgery. Now the scenario is different. Marc is very connected with his bike, and results come easily even on tricky tracks.”
Espargaro also highlighted Marquez's current superiority. “Who can stop this winning streak? Who can stop this feeling of superiority he has right now? We've seen in the past that when Marc feels like this, he is unstoppable and things always go better for him and worse for the others. So it's really hard to imagine this dynamic turning around. It's very difficult to stop Marc in his current situation.”
On the other hand, Espargaro also discussed KTM's condition. “Maybe we expected a little more. I myself don't have the full information yet because I just came from a Moto2 test with the 850 and haven't had time to sit down with the engineers. But it's true that we are slowly returning to normality. We've left behind the reliability problems caused by an engine supplier we didn't control. The other remaining issues are being gradually resolved.”
Espargaro is targeting a top-10 finish at Spielberg, KTM's home circuit. “This is a special track for KTM, and I want to deliver the best result for the team. We will work hard from the first practice session,” he concluded.
