Pirelli will become MotoGP's sole tyre supplier from 2027, replacing Michelin which has held the contract since 2016. One of the most noticeable changes will be the introduction of colour-coded sidewalls to distinguish compounds, similar to what is already used in Formula 1.
The move was announced as Pirelli delivered its latest batch of tyres to manufacturers at the Aragon circuit this weekend. Each manufacturer – Ducati, Aprilia, KTM, Honda, and Yamaha – received 80 tyres to continue their development programme ahead of the first pre-season test in Valencia on 1 December.
The colours will follow the same pattern as in F1: red for soft, yellow for medium, white for hard, blue for full wet, and green for intermediate. Interestingly, intermediate tyres will make a return to MotoGP after Michelin removed them in 2017.
This delivery is part of Pirelli's long preparation, which began developing MotoGP tyres since being announced as the new supplier in March 2025. They have conducted extensive testing with all five manufacturers, including an official test at Brno on 22 June.
The change comes alongside the new 2027 technical regulations that will introduce 850cc engines, ban ride-height devices, restrict aerodynamic development, and use 100% non-fossil fuel. Pirelli believes the colour markings will make it easier for fans to identify the tyre compounds used by riders on track.
The next test will take place in Austria on 21 September, open to all teams including satellite outfits. They will receive tyres through their respective manufacturers. At the official Valencia test after the season finale, Pirelli will supply tyres to all riders.
