Pierre Gasly has launched a scathing attack on the culture of online harassment that is increasingly plaguing Formula 1. The Alpine driver became the target of social media vitriol following a controversial incident with teammate Franco Colapinto at the Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring circuit. Gasly's frustration extends beyond his on-track struggles to personal attacks that have crossed into his private life.
In qualifying, Gasly could only manage 12th on the grid, while Colapinto reached Q3 and went on to finish seventh, ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri. Gasly's race strategy, opting for a long stint on hard tyres in hopes of a safety car, backfired. When he eventually pitted for fresh rubber, he inadvertently held up Colapinto, who was fending off the Australian driver. Colapinto vented his frustration over team radio, though he ultimately did not lose the position.
The on-track incident spiraled into a wave of online hate, including threats and abuse that have no place in public discourse. Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, the Frenchman spoke out firmly. "Personally, I find it a little bit disturbing for our sport," he said. "I'm a top athlete, so I know I'm exposed. It's always been the case, but to that extent of threats, attacks, I find it completely inappropriate, especially when it reaches out to family members, girlfriend, etc."
Gasly emphasised that criticism and dislike are part of being a public figure, but there is a line that should never be crossed. "You can be liked, you can be disliked, it's completely fine. But there is a certain line that should not be crossed just because you're behind the screen, with a keyboard and these lines. These lines are crossed a bit too many times," he added. He hopes Formula 1 as a sport can find a way to create a healthier environment for drivers and teams.
The off-track pressure adds to Gasly's burden as he fights to lift his performance with Alpine. The Enstone-based team remains stuck in the midfield of the Constructors' Championship, and every point is crucial. The setback in Spain was a heavy blow, especially as rival teams like McLaren and Aston Martin continue to score consistently. Gasly is urged to bounce back in Baku, a street circuit that demands precision and clever strategy.
The Azerbaijan race will be a mental test for Gasly. The Baku City Circuit is notoriously difficult, with a mix of tight corners and long straights that open overtaking opportunities. If he can maximise Alpine's upgrade package and avoid drama, Gasly has a chance to regain momentum. However, the shadow of the Madring incident lingers, particularly regarding his internal relationship with Colapinto, which briefly heated up.
Gasly's case is not the first in the paddock. Several other drivers have endured similar onslaughts, highlighting the need for collective action from the FIA, teams, and social media platforms. Concrete steps such as stricter content moderation and anti-abuse campaigns are imperative. Gasly hopes his experience can trigger change, so that the sport is not just about speed but also about respecting humanity.
