Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Pierre Gasly triggered a fine for Alpine after an unusual incident ahead of the Sprint race at the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix 2026 at the Shanghai International Circuit.
The Enstone-based team was fined €5,000 after Gasly’s car left the garage with a protective antenna shield still attached. The cover later detached and landed on the circuit while the French driver was making his way to the grid.
The incident occurred as car #10 exited the garage to begin reconnaissance laps prior to the Sprint race. According to the stewards’ report, the car entered the track with the antenna shield still fitted, an item that should have been removed before leaving the pit.
“Car 10 left its garage to commence reconnaissance laps with a protective shield covering the antenna still attached. The car entered the track with the antenna shield still attached and it dislodged while the car was on track,” the stewards’ report stated.
The equipment was later recovered by trackside marshals and delivered to the stewards as part of the investigation.
Gasly explained that he was unaware the antenna shield remained attached because his view was obstructed by the halo device.
“The driver explained that his line of sight of the antenna shield was obscured by the halo and he had no idea it was there until he saw something fly off the car and immediately reported it to the team,” the report added.
A team representative from Alpine stated that the crew had been dealing with communication issues while preparing the car for the reconnaissance laps. As a result, the antenna shield was mistakenly left in place and the error was only noticed after the car had already entered the pit lane fast lane.
The stewards determined that releasing the car in such a condition constituted an unsafe release.
“While not a large or heavy object, the shield could have struck another driver or car when it detached and caused injury or damage,” the stewards concluded.
For the breach, Alpine was handed a €5,000 fine for releasing the car in an unsafe condition.
Gasly eventually finished the Sprint race in 11th place after battling in the midfield during the short race in Shanghai.
