Piastri Mocks F1 2026 Rules: Cars Need to Learn First

Oscar Piastri has once again become the center of attention ahead of the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix. The McLaren driver made a sarcastic remark regarding the technical regulations of Formula 1 2026, which he considers overly complex and confusing. His statement immediately sparked discussions among fans and pundits.

In context, the Sepang International Circuit returns to the F1 calendar in 2026 after nearly a decade-long absence. More than half of the current grid have never raced on the iconic track. Piastri and his teammate Lando Norris relied on simulator work to learn the circuit before official practice sessions began.

"In terms of sim work, it's the normal amount. The sims help you identify braking points, roughly which gears to use, and how fast you can go. But when you get into the finer details, especially with this year's cars and power units, it becomes very challenging," Piastri said on Thursday in Bahrain.

He added that extra simulator work does not always yield proportional results. There is a point where the simulator stops being useful. Consequently, drivers must rely more on real practice sessions to understand the car and track, which can take longer than usual.

Piastri's comment is not without reason. The 2026 regulations introduce major changes to the power unit, with more complex energy systems and the car's ability to 'learn' independently through advanced software. This raises questions about the driver's role in controlling the car, and whether technology is taking over their tasks.

When asked how many laps it takes to feel comfortable on a new track, Piastri jokingly replied, "I think these cars need about 10 laps to learn where they're going. So it will probably be the power unit that's trying to learn things after I am." His answer seemed to emphasize that the 2026 generation cars have artificial intelligence that must 'learn' first, before the driver can adapt.

The comment implies that the complexity of the 2026 cars has changed the way drivers prepare. If the car has to 'learn' first, then time spent in the simulator may no longer be sufficient. This could be a particular challenge for teams like McLaren, who must balance software development with pure speed.

As a result, competition in the 2026 season could be more unpredictable. Teams that can optimize the car's learning systems may gain an advantage. However, on the other hand, the driver factor remains crucial, especially in reading changing track conditions. Piastri, as one of the young talents, seems to want to emphasize that the human role is still irreplaceable.

As of now, there has been no official response from the FIA or McLaren regarding Piastri's comments. However, his statement has sparked speculation that the 2026 regulations may need to be reevaluated, especially regarding the balance between technology and driver skill.
