Piastri at Risk of Losing P3 on Italian GP Grid for Lawson Impeding

Oscar Piastri and McLaren have been summoned by Formula 1 stewards after allegedly impeding Liam Lawson during Italian GP qualifying at Monza. The Australian driver now risks losing his third-place grid spot for Sunday's race.

The incident occurred in the dying moments of Q2, as Lawson, driving for Red Bull as a replacement for injured Isack Hadjar, was preparing for his final flying lap. Piastri, on an out-lap approaching the first chicane, slowed to let Lawson's teammate Max Verstappen through.

However, the McLaren driver then slotted ahead of Lawson through the chicane, delaying the New Zealander on the exit towards Curva Grande. Lawson consequently failed to progress from Q2, ending the session 14th.

Grid Impact and Steward Investigation

The incident will not affect Lawson's starting position, as he was already due to start from the back after Red Bull introduced new power unit components. But Piastri's third place is now under threat after both drivers were summoned to the stewards at 17:40 local time.

The official summons states Piastri is being investigated for an alleged breach of FIA regulations, with the incident described as car 81 allegedly impeding car 30 at turn 2. If penalized, the second row of the grid for the Italian Grand Prix could change.
