For a moment, Petter Solberg thought his son had made history in the WRC. As Oliver Solberg closed in on the final stop line of the 2026 World Rally Championship season, he was on title-winning pace. The Solberg family was even asked to gather round the stop control to welcome Oliver and co-driver Elliott Edmondson in as new world champions.
However, a dramatic incident in the dying moments completely altered the outcome of this prestigious international rally championship. It was a tough moment for Oliver Solberg, but also for his father who thought he and Oliver were about to become the first father and son world champions in rallying history. As reported by DirtFish, Petter Solberg admitted that the emotional pressure had been immense throughout the entire weekend.
"The heart rate has been high the whole weekend," Petter Solberg told DirtFish, noting his son's unwavering belief and passion to claim the world title despite facing a significant 21-point deficit heading into the final round.
The 2003 world champion added that what unfolded on the stages was unlike anything he had ever witnessed before, with the entire championship battle being decided within the final two corners. The chaotic finale saw shifting fortunes involving contenders such as Thierry Neuville and Adrien Fourmaux, creating a spectacle unique to the sport.
Despite the overwhelming disappointment of losing out by a mere 1.9 seconds near the finish, Petter Solberg emphasized the positives of an incredible debut full campaign. He consoled his son, highlighting his rally victory and world championship silver medal while graciously acknowledging the hard-earned success of world champion Elfyn Evans.
