Pedro Acosta finally broke through. At the Red Bull Ring, the young Spaniard claimed his long-awaited maiden MotoGP victory, a moment that had been brewing since he burst onto the premier class scene. But behind the celebration lies a tale of relentless improvement that has left his KTM crew in awe.
Crew chief Paul Trevathan admits it's tough to predict just how far the 22-year-old can go. "It's a scary question, because at the moment I couldn't tell you," he told MotoGP.com. "The way the guy is learning, the way the guy is stepping up, I mean, he had a month off in the summer, and he came back again at another level."
Trevathan's words carry weight. Acosta's season has been a rollercoaster. He started with a Sprint win and an early championship lead, only for KTM's reliability woes and a performance slump to halt his charge. From Balaton Park to the German GP, he scored just three points out of a possible 74, dropping as low as seventh in the standings.
Yet Acosta never wavered. After the summer break, he delivered a stunning ride at Silverstone—one he considers among the best of his career. With KTM's engine issues resolved, full performance returned from Aragon, where he embarked on a podium streak that culminated in his breakthrough win in Austria.
What impresses Trevathan most is Acosta's ability to reset in such a short time. "I've seen great riders do this, but they normally take a winter," he said. "But to do a reset like he did in the summer, and then come back and ride and push us in the way he pushed us to make things better, it's unbelievable."
Acosta now sits fourth in the championship, 72 points behind leader Jorge Martin. With a factory Ducati contract for 2027 already secured, he remains fully committed to KTM. This weekend's Japanese GP will be the next test, and if his upward trajectory continues, another strong result could be on the cards.
For Trevathan, the question of Acosta's ceiling remains unanswered. But one thing is certain: the young rider is still on the rise, and the MotoGP world should take notice.
