KTM MotoGP star Pedro Acosta spent his weekend off in an unusual way – competing in a 24-hour karting race at the Le Mans circuit. The 22-year-old, who regularly trains at the Go-Karts Mar Menor track near his hometown in Murcia, Spain, joined a team from that track to take part in the Karting des 24 Heures.
Acosta and his team raced in the Open Kart 270cc category, with their kart sporting his MotoGP number 37. Starting from eighth position, they didn't make it to the podium, but the Spaniard was pleased with the experience. "Amazing weekend competing in the Karting des 24 Heures. Thanks to Go-Kart Mar Menor family," he wrote on social media.
The event organizers were thrilled to have him. "Karting des 24 Heures had the honour of having Pedro Acosta's presence during the 24 Hours of Open Kart 270cc on the Prost B Track. Between the two MotoGP grands prix, the KTM rider came to have fun with friends," they said.
Acosta stayed at the circuit for the full 24 hours, swapping his usual comforts for an air mattress in a garage. This is not the first time he has indulged in four-wheel racing this year; he also visited the Formula 1 Barcelona Grand Prix and a NASCAR race in the USA.
Heading into this weekend's Aragon Grand Prix, Acosta sits seventh in the standings, 77 points behind championship leader Jorge Martin of Aprilia. He hasn't scored a podium since the Hungarian Grand Prix, as KTM has faced a series of technical issues in recent rounds, forcing them to turn down their engines.
KTM has now been granted permission to unseal those engines and apply a fix, which should improve reliability. However, Acosta noted at the British Grand Prix that this wouldn't bring the lap time gains KTM needs to consistently fight at the front. Ahead of Aragon, KTM is third in the constructors' championship, 162 points behind leaders Aprilia and 133 behind Ducati in second.
