Pedro Acosta has finally broken his victory drought. After over a thousand days without a win, the Spanish rider surged to the top step of the MotoGP podium in front of KTM's home crowd. This victory is more than just a trophy; it's a testament to perseverance and self-belief.
From the moment the lights went out, Acosta didn't have a smooth start. He dropped to fifth place, far from expectations as the home favorite. But his fighting spirit burned bright. One by one, he hunted down his rivals, exploiting every gap on a track he had mastered since free practice. The race turned into a thrilling chase that captivated fans.
The win felt even sweeter after a heartbreaking crash in the Sprint Race the day before. While leading, Acosta fell, throwing away a certain victory. “Yesterday I was furious because the win was within reach,” he told DAZN. “Today I also crashed in warm-up because I was too nervous. I kept thinking, ‘Don't fail again.’ But I was lucky to have Carmelo beside me saying, ‘Relax, we haven't won in three years, it's ok if you don't win today’.”
In a tightly contested race, managing the final laps was crucial. “For the last three or four laps, I just focused on staying calm, hitting the chicane smoothly, and finishing the race,” he added. “I lost concentration momentarily, and that was my mistake. But I'm overjoyed because the team and the fans deserve this.”
Jorge Lorenzo, working as a commentator, congratulated Acosta and asked how he managed this “miracle” with the KTM. “This is one of the circuits where the bike has felt good since day one. I was fast on Friday. Since the summer break, I've said there's improvement every day. It's about self-conviction, not stopping believing that one day it would come. And it came at the home Grand Prix, so better than ever,” Acosta explained.
The pressure before the race was immense. Acosta admitted that having his parents at the track can sometimes add stress. “There are races where tension peaks, and this is one. Sometimes it's better to come with fewer people and let them enjoy from home. I know how I get, they know too. It's better to set sentiment aside and focus professionally,” he said. “Yesterday was a hard blow for everyone. I was even awake at night, praying not to repeat the mistake. Because opportunities like yesterday don't come every day.”
This victory also serves as a sweet farewell for Acosta in his final year with KTM. Although their paths will diverge, he wanted to give his best. “KTM deserves this. They do everything they can, even knowing we'll part ways. It's like closing the circle,” he concluded. Now, the world waits to see if this is the start of Acosta's rise to the top.
