Pedro Acosta etched his name into the history books by securing his first-ever MotoGP victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, KTM's home race. The young Spaniard bounced back from a heartbreaking crash while leading the sprint race the day before, turning disappointment into a triumphant redemption ride.
Starting from third on the grid, Acosta had to navigate a fierce battle. Jorge Martin, who started from pole, took the holeshot and led into Turn 1, with his Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi slotting into second after passing Marc Marquez. Ai Ogura also made a lightning start from the second row, briefly making it an Aprilia 1-2-3 on the opening lap. But Acosta was not to be denied; he quickly dispatched Marquez to take fourth.
Bezzecchi, showing strong pace, tried to attack Martin at Turn 6 but had to wait until Lap 2 to take the lead. Martin responded and retook the position, while Acosta passed Ogura at Turn 6 and began setting fastest laps to close in on the Aprilias. On Lap 4, at the same chicane where he crashed in the sprint, Acosta overtook Bezzecchi for second and set his sights on Martin.
It took Acosta a few laps to catch Martin, but once he did, he started probing for a way through. On Lap 9, he struck at the chicane and took the lead. From there, he never looked back. Behind him, Marquez, who had been struggling, ran wide at Turn 1 and dropped to seventh, before fighting his way back to fifth by the flag.
Acosta withstood all challenges to claim his maiden MotoGP win in his final race with KTM at their home circuit. Martin finished second after holding off a late charge from Bezzecchi, who completed the podium in third. Ogura used his late-race pace to take fourth, while Marquez was disappointed with fifth. Brad Binder finished sixth, followed by Francesco Bagnaia in seventh. Fermin Aldeguer, who crossed the line eighth, was given a three-second penalty for causing contact. Fabio Di Giannantonio and Johann Zarco completed the top 10. Enea Bastianini could not replicate his usual late-race pace and finished 11th, while Raul Fernandez edged Takaaki Nakagami for 12th. Luca Marini was 14th and Diogo Moreira rounded out the points in 15th.
This victory is an emotional moment for Acosta and KTM, marking a sweet farewell before he leaves the team. With his impressive performance, Acosta has proven he is one of MotoGP's brightest future stars.
