Pascal Wehrlein Takes Formula E Shanghai Pole in 2026

Pascal Wehrlein claimed pole position for the opening race of the 2026 Shanghai E-Prix after defeating championship leader Mitch Evans in qualifying. The Porsche driver delivered a 1:09.260 in the final duel to secure the top starting position for round 12 of the Formula E season.

The result carries significant championship value because Wehrlein also collected three points for pole position. That reduced his deficit to Evans to 24 points before the first race of the Shanghai double-header.

Evans had to settle for second after finishing 0.203 seconds behind Wehrlein in the final. Although he missed pole, the front-row start still gives the Jaguar driver a strong opportunity to limit the damage in the title fight.

Jake Dennis qualified third for Andretti, while Maximilian Gunther completed the top four for DS Penske. That front group places Porsche, Jaguar, Andretti and DS Penske in the leading positions, creating a race that is likely to revolve around energy efficiency, track position and attack-mode execution.

Two title contenders endured a more difficult qualifying session. Oliver Rowland could only manage 13th for Nissan, while Edoardo Mortara qualified 18th for Mahindra, leaving both drivers with significant ground to recover in the race.

Three drivers will not start from their qualifying positions because of grid penalties. Dan Ticktum has a three-place grid penalty, Zane Maloney has a 43-place grid penalty, and Norman Nato has a 60-place grid penalty.

The result puts Wehrlein in a strategic position to attack the championship gap, while Evans remains close enough to defend his advantage from the front row. With Formula E races heavily shaped by energy management, attack-mode timing and efficiency, the 2026 Shanghai E-Prix could become a decisive phase in the title battle.
