A violent overnight storm battered the service park, but Sami Pajari emerged even more comfortable at the top of Rally Paraguay. Despite his growing lead, the Finn refuses to ease off—there is still a long road ahead before the finish flag drops.
The heavy rain that was forecast barely touched the stages. Pajari admitted he woke up several times during the night as the storm raged, and in the morning saw tents collapsed across the service park. Yet on the stages, only a few spots saw light drizzle. "That was perhaps a positive surprise," he said, "but it also showed that weather can be unpredictable."
On the third stage of the morning, Pajari gave fans a scare when he lost part of his rear wing after brushing a bank. From the outside it looked dramatic, but Pajari insisted the impact felt minor. "I didn't expect any damage," he explained, "so it was a shock to hear the rear wing had come off. It's not there for show, and the final stage was a bit tricky."
Through the four morning stages, Pajari stretched his lead over Hayden Paddon of Hyundai to 22.9 seconds. Paddon has been consistent but hasn't been able to apply real pressure. Pajari, however, stressed that leading doesn't make things any calmer. "It feels like something is still happening on every stage," he said, "so the situation is anything but quiet."
Two consecutive WRC wins haven't made Pajari complacent. He knows conditions can change in an instant, especially with the weather so unsettled. "We have to be happy with this position," he said, "but it's still a long way to go, and anything can happen."
Looking ahead to the afternoon loop, Pajari hopes to maintain his rhythm. Meanwhile, Paddon and the chasing pack will likely try different strategies to close the gap. One thing is certain: Rally Paraguay still has plenty of drama left.
