Sami Pajari continues to lead Rally Paraguay by 22.8s over Hayden Paddon after a dramatic Saturday morning. However, the overnight leader almost failed to finish the Hohenau test after running wide and hitting a bank on a fast left-hander.
His GR Yaris Rally1 bounced into the air on two wheels, and the impact sheared off the upper plane of his rear wing. Fortunately, there was no mechanical damage, and he managed to continue to the finish. "On one stage we lose the wing, on one stage we even hit one small tree on the way," Pajari said. "It's a crazy rally, even when the conditions aren't so bad, it's a demanding rally."
Pajari's lucky escape contrasted with Romet Jurgenson's fate. The M-Sport WRC2 leader was quick, but then ran wide at the same corner, smacking the rear of his Fiesta Rally2 into the bank. That pitched him nose-first into the dirt wall, wrecking the front end and ending his rally.
The unexpectedly dry conditions caught many drivers out. Heavy rain had battered the service park, forcing M-Sport to move its service bays into a rented tent, but the stages themselves were mostly dry. This affected Paddon more than most: "I'm struggling for rhythm at the moment," he said. He was also perturbed by a false puncture warning on the Bella Vista Sur test.
Championship leader Elfyn Evans is now closing on second place after winning a stage and gaining 11.7s on Paddon. Meanwhile, Adrien Fourmaux was the fastest of the morning, winning two stages and cutting his deficit to Evans to 31.8s. Evans is concerned: "He's going hard, obviously." With dry conditions expected to continue, the fight at the front is far from over.
