Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Former Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer has joined Van Amersfoort Racing as its new CEO and managing partner, marking his return to a senior leadership role in international motorsport.
Szafnauer brings decades of experience in Formula 1 management. The 61-year-old most recently served as team principal of Alpine before leaving the Enstone-based organisation midway through the 2023 season.
Prior to his time at Alpine, Szafnauer was widely recognised for helping transform the underdog Force India outfit into a consistent midfield contender. He continued to lead the team through its transitions into Racing Point and later Aston Martin.

In his new position at Van Amersfoort Racing, Szafnauer will oversee the organisation’s competitive performance and strategic direction across several junior single-seater categories, including Formula 2 and Formula 3.
“Van Amersfoort Racing has a strong reputation for developing talent and competing at a high level across multiple categories,” Szafnauer said.
“I look forward to working closely with the leadership team and the wider organisation to guide the next phase of the team’s development.”
Van Amersfoort Racing team principal Brad Joyce, who previously worked alongside Szafnauer at Force India as a race engineer, welcomed the appointment and highlighted the strategic value of his experience.
“Otmar’s experience and leadership add valuable perspective to the organisation. His appointment significantly strengthens VAR as we continue to evolve and pursue our long-term vision,” Joyce stated.
The move places Szafnauer at the centre of one of motorsport’s key driver development pathways, with Van Amersfoort Racing playing an important role in preparing young talents for the step up to Formula 1.
