Oscar Piastri has finally opened up about the performance crisis haunting him throughout 2026. Ahead of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the Australian driver admitted there is a fundamental issue causing him to fall behind teammate and reigning champion Lando Norris.
This season has been a nightmare for Piastri. He has failed to win a race, while Norris has already secured two victories. A stark contrast to 2025, when Piastri fought for the title until the final round.
Not Just a Low-Grip Problem
Piastri insisted his struggles cannot be simplified as merely a low-grip issue. He noted that his natural driving style does not always suit the characteristics of the McLaren MCL40 this year.
"It's not that simple. This year, the way I like to drive the car is not necessarily the best way to drive these cars. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. That's the challenge," Piastri told media, including Motorsport Week.
He also revealed that the problems he faces are inconsistent. Each round, he is chasing something different, making the improvement process more complex.
Narrow Operating Window of MCL40 Is the Culprit
Piastri disclosed that the very narrow operating window of the MCL40 is exacerbating his situation. When the car is in its sweet spot, everything feels easy. But when it falls outside that zone, his performance drops dramatically.
"It's very easy to have a spiral in both directions, both positive and negative. When you're comfortable, you have more capacity to think. Unfortunately, we've often been on the wrong side," he explained.
Qualifying at Zandvoort offered a glimmer of hope as his pace improved. However, on race day, he lost his rhythm again and finished far behind Norris.
"Qualifying at Zandvoort showed a significant improvement. We have good answers as to why the race there was difficult. The process is ongoing, but it takes time and experimentation," he added.
With Monza prioritizing top speed and aerodynamic efficiency, the pressure is now even greater. Failure there could widen the gap to Norris in the standings.
The question is, will Piastri find the right solution in time? Or will this crisis prolong and threaten his position in the team? Monza will be the true test.
