Opel's Evans Signing Makes Them Formula E Dark Horse

The official confirmation that Mitch Evans will lead Opel's first Formula E campaign brings an end to one of the paddock's worst-kept secrets. Evans signed back in the spring, with The Race first reporting the deal shortly after.

Since then, Evans has been spotted testing the Stellantis Gen4 development car after Jaguar released him to gain early experience this summer. The driver with the most Formula E wins (16) will join the already-announced Theo Pourchaire at the Opel GSE Formula E team, essentially a start-up operation running under its own licence.

This marks the first Stellantis entry not aligned with independent service providers like MSG (Maserati and Citroen) or Virgin, Techeetah and Penske (DS). Opel is still recruiting for several senior roles after signing former Porsche sportscar team manager Francis Shammo in April.

Despite less experience in some areas compared to rivals in the quirky all-electric series, Opel benefits from a dedicated test and development push via a separate Stellantis Motorsport test team. Jorg Schrott, Opel's motorsport director and team principal, stressed this cohesion as a key strength.

"We have a very good engineering team together, and the base work has to be done as one team. The more input you get from all those good drivers, they always give you a little bit different input, and this is helping to push the whole programme forward," he said. "We are definitely backing on the strong experience of Stellantis over the last decade too."

Evans's departure from Jaguar felt inevitable after two fractious season finales in 2024 and 2025, both at London Excel. On each occasion, a seething Evans vented at his team over missed title chances in 2024 and a poor result in 2025. While Evans was not blameless in those flashpoints, James Barclay's exit to McLaren's Hypercar programme and the arrival of technical director Theophile Gouzin accelerated the split after a decade together.

With Evans and Pourchaire, Opel looks like a genuine dark horse. Backed by Stellantis and armed with Evans's race-winning pedigree, they could be competitive from the very first round.
