Ai Ogura has undergone surgery on his left thumb following a training accident in Japan this week, with the Trackhouse MotoGP team confirming the operation was successful. However, the recovery timeline remains unclear, leaving his participation in upcoming races uncertain.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the Aprilia satellite squad revealed that Ai Ogura was treated by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Xavier Mir in Barcelona. The procedure involved inserting a plate into the fractured thumb. Ogura's condition will be reassessed over the weekend before a rehabilitation plan is established.
Trackhouse admitted it is too early to confirm whether Ogura will be fit for the San Marino Grand Prix on September 11-13. What is certain is that the injury forces him to miss this weekend's Aragon Grand Prix.
"Trackhouse MotoGP rider, Ai Ogura, has undergone surgery this morning in Barcelona, Spain," the team statement read. "Dr. Mir, who performed the procedure, has reported that Ai's left thumb fracture has been plated, and an assessment on his condition will be made over the coming weekend before a rehabilitation plan is established."
Ogura crashed while training at a track near Tokyo during the break after Silverstone. The incident resulted in a fracture, and doctors advised him to skip the Aragon GP. The announcement of his withdrawal came late Wednesday evening, hours after the team had confirmed his availability for media day.
The injury strikes at the start of a busy MotoGP period and significantly hampers his championship hopes. Currently third in the standings, Ogura trails championship leader Jorge Martin by 37 points, having slipped from second after his crash at Silverstone.
With Ogura absent from Aragon, closing the gap to Martin becomes even harder. A swift recovery could still allow him to fight back in San Marino, but his title challenge is now hanging by a thread.
