Bad luck continues to haunt Ai Ogura. The Japanese rider has been ruled out of this weekend's MotoGP San Marino round as his thumb injury has not yet healed. It marks the second consecutive race he has missed, following his withdrawal from Aragon.
The injury was sustained during a motocross training session in Japan, shortly after the British GP at Silverstone. This comes at a time when Ogura was enjoying the best form of his career, having secured one win and two second-place finishes that propelled him to third in the championship, just 37 points behind leader Jorge Martin. Now, with two consecutive rounds missed, Ogura has dropped to fifth, 53 points adrift, and his title aspirations have all but evaporated.
The news was confirmed by his team, Trackhouse Racing. After undergoing surgery before Aragon, Ogura had hoped to race at Misano, but a medical check in Barcelona on Tuesday evening revealed that his recovery is not yet sufficient to compete. Reluctantly, he has withdrawn from the San Marino Grand Prix to prioritize his long-term health.
The American squad will not field a replacement rider. Lorenzo Savadori, Aprilia's test rider who stepped in for Ogura at Aragon, is unavailable for Misano, leaving Raul Fernandez as the team's sole entry. This is a significant blow for the team as they aim to climb the standings.
Ogura will remain in Barcelona to focus on rehabilitation, targeting a comeback at the Austrian Grand Prix next week. The question remains whether such a short break will be enough to restore his full fitness. Fans will be hoping the “Little Samurai” can return to the track soon and showcase his talent once again.
