Sebastien Ogier's Rally Paraguay campaign went from bad to worse on SS2. After a puncture in the opening stage, the Toyota driver hit a bank hard, damaging his front-left tyre and breaking the suspension. He stopped to change the wheel, but the damage was too severe, costing him over five minutes.
"I made a mistake and hit the bank, damaging the car. The suspension is broken. I'm sorry to Adrien if I was in his way," Ogier said.
Meanwhile, Adrien Fourmaux was briefly held up behind Ogier but still managed fifth fastest. A time adjustment could yet improve his position. "You don't get to overtake a nine-time world champion every day," Fourmaux joked. "I gave his rear bumper a little kiss and Seb let us past straight away."
The fight for second place in the overall standings is intense. Hayden Paddon was third fastest on the stage and holds a 0.5-second advantage over Fourmaux.
Sami Pajari finished the stage but admitted issues. "We're crawling through the stages. We don't have enough power," the Finn said, currently seventh overall.
Hyundai's Thierry Neuville was forced to retire after a minor off on SS1. Ford's Josh McErlean impressed, finishing just 2.2 seconds behind Oliver Solberg, who set the fastest time.
Six more stages await on Friday, with the rally concluding on Sunday.
