Esteban Ocon has publicly declared himself a "free agent" for the 2027 Formula 1 season, as Haas has yet to finalise their driver line-up. The Frenchman confirmed he is exploring options with other teams, though he did not rule out remaining with the American squad.
Ocon's contract with Haas expires at the end of the 2026 season, and the team has been using its Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) programme to evaluate potential partners for Ollie Bearman. Among the candidates are Ferrari junior Rafael Camara, reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli, and current reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa. Recent rumours suggest Haas is leaning towards Camara, who currently leads the F2 standings and is the reigning F3 champion. However, team boss Ayao Komatsu stated during the Spanish GP that he has "maybe five" drivers in contention.
"Yes, at the moment I am definitely a free agent for next year," Ocon said. "There are things in discussion that are out of my control and there are certain topics that are out of my control. So I will keep pushing until the end of the year and see how it goes." When asked if staying at Haas was an option, Ocon remained tight-lipped and responded: "let's see."
Despite his uncertain future, Ocon expressed satisfaction with his performances this season. He struggled with an inconsistent car early on but has shown improvement recently. However, his stronger showings have gone largely unrewarded as Haas' performance has slipped from its early-season points-scoring form. "We know it's been an ongoing issue," he said. "It's reassuring that I'm doing a good job. Obviously, my performance hasn't been an issue this year. I've performed every time I had the car. I've been the last one to score in Monaco. I was almost scoring in Madrid. There's been a lot of times where I've performed when the car was underperforming. It's been clear."
Ocon added that the entire team has been closely monitoring the situation and working to fix the problem. "We haven't been hiding from it. But it's been quite disappointing at times, obviously, to have these kind of problems." Meanwhile, Bearman was asked if he felt ready to step up as team leader should Ocon leave. The Briton said he has learned a lot from his team-mate over nearly two years together, particularly in terms of feedback in the engineering room.
With his free agent status, Ocon is open to joining another team. However, F1 opportunities are dwindling as seats are filling up. Several top teams have already locked in their line-ups, leaving Ocon to compete for remaining vacancies. His strong recent performances could be a selling point, but the team's dip in form has overshadowed his personal achievements.
Haas' decision on their 2027 line-up will shape Ocon's career path. If the team opts for Camara or another driver, Ocon must look elsewhere. Conversely, if Haas retains him, he can continue building the project alongside Bearman. Regardless, Ocon is determined to give his best until the end of the season.
