Esteban Ocon has described himself as a "free agent" for next season, with Haas yet to finalize its driver lineup. The Frenchman made the admission during media day ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, signaling that his future with the American squad remains up in the air.
Ocon joined Haas ahead of 2025 but has endured a difficult second campaign, scoring only three of the team's 21 points so far this year as Haas has slipped from its stronger early-season form. His position has come under increasing scrutiny as the team evaluates several alternatives through its Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) program.
When asked directly about his contractual situation, Ocon was candid. "At the moment, I'm definitely a free agent for next year," he said. "There are things in discussion that are out of my control. I will keep pushing until the end of the year and see how it goes." He also confirmed that talks with other teams are ongoing, though he was less forthcoming when asked if remaining with Haas was still possible. "Let's see," he said.
The uncertainty comes as the number of realistic openings elsewhere on the 2027 grid continues to shrink. McLaren, Ferrari, Williams, Alpine, and Cadillac already have their pairings in place, while Max Verstappen has committed his long-term future to Red Bull and Isack Hadjar has been confirmed alongside him. Mercedes and Audi are also expected to continue with their existing combinations, leaving few obvious destinations for Ocon should he and Haas part ways.
Aston Martin could enter the market depending on Fernando Alonso's plans beyond 2026, while the remaining uncertainty in the Red Bull system centers on the two Racing Bulls seats. Haas itself is continuing to investigate several options for who will race alongside Oliver Bearman, who is expected to stay for a third season. The team has used recent TPC outings to evaluate candidates such as Ferrari junior Rafael Camara, McLaren reserve Leonardo Fornaroli, and Haas reserve Ryo Hirakawa.
Jack Doohan also remains in the equation after completing his first Haas test at Jerez earlier this week alongside Hirakawa and Toyota-backed Sho Tsuboi. The Australian joined Haas as a test and reserve driver before the start of this season and returned to an F1 cockpit for the first time since his Alpine race stint ended after the 2025 Miami Grand Prix.
Team principal Ayao Komatsu has previously said Haas has several drivers under consideration and stressed that outright performance will carry the greatest weight when the team makes its decision. With that in mind, Ocon will need to prove himself in the remaining races if he hopes to secure his future with the Kannapolis-based squad.
The decision is expected to take time, and Ocon will continue to keep his options open. This situation adds another layer of intrigue to the driver market ahead of 2027, and fans will be eager to see how it unfolds.
