Sunday midday at Milwaukee turned into a showcase for Pato O'Ward. Amidst a rain-delayed double-header weekend, the Mexican driver charged from second on the grid, overtook polesitter Alex Palou, and never looked back to claim his second win of the season.
The victory carried an unusual twist. Race 1 of the weekend remained paused under red flag conditions due to rain, yet O'Ward was still credited as the leader of that unfinished event. A bizarre situation, but one that made his weekend even more memorable.
Behind him, Scott McLaughlin finished second, just 0.791 seconds adrift. David Malukas completed the podium in third, securing a Chevrolet lockout of the top three. Honda had to settle for watching its rival celebrate, though Alex Palou still managed to chip away at the championship gap.
Palou came home fifth after leading early, but the biggest talking point was Josef Newgarden. The Penske driver spun on his own while running fifth, smashing into the wall and triggering a caution. It was a bitter day for Newgarden, whose oval season has been feast or famine.
Another stellar performance came from Kyle Kirkwood, who stormed from 24th on the grid to finish sixth, just behind Palou. His title hopes remain slim but alive. Meanwhile, Christian Lundgaard, Rinus VeeKay, and Marcus Ericsson also grabbed valuable points.
The race also provided a stage for Mick Schumacher to finish 13th and Louis Foster to take 10th. But attention now shifts to the resumption of Race 1, scheduled just a couple of hours after this event concludes. Drivers must quickly refocus, and O'Ward will aim to hold his lead in that unfinished race.
