Nyck de Vries secured a crucial victory in the opening race of the 2026 Formula E Monaco E-Prix after a chaotic and incident-filled contest ended behind the safety car at the Circuit de Monaco.
The Mahindra driver converted second on the grid into his first win of the season following a difficult opening phase of the championship. The Monaco result immediately revives de Vries’ position in the Formula E title fight.
The race turned dramatic in the closing stages following a major collision involving pole sitter Dan Ticktum and Jaguar driver Antonio Felix da Costa. The incident triggered a safety car period which remained in place until the chequered flag.

From a technical perspective, Monaco once again highlighted how sensitive Formula E remains to energy management, Attack Mode positioning, and overtaking timing on narrow street circuits. Strategy played a decisive role throughout the race as several drivers struggled to maintain energy efficiency while battling aggressively in traffic.
Mitch Evans capitalised on the late-race chaos to finish second and take over the championship lead. The Jaguar driver continued his strong momentum following victory in Berlin.
Meanwhile, Ticktum had initially crossed the line in third place after starting from pole position. However, the stewards later handed him a 33-second time penalty after judging him responsible for the collision with Da Costa.
The penalty promoted Pepe Marti to third position, securing the young Cupra Kiro driver his maiden Formula E podium finish.
Felipe Drugovich finished fourth for Andretti ahead of Sebastien Buemi and Joel Eriksson. DS Penske placed both cars inside the top eight through Taylor Barnard and Maximilian Gunther.
It proved a difficult race for title contender Pascal Wehrlein, who finished only 18th, while reigning world champion Oliver Rowland could manage only 15th after struggling throughout the event.
With the championship battle tightening further and momentum beginning to shift ahead of the second Monaco E-Prix race, the 2026 Formula E title fight now appears increasingly wide open heading into the next phase of the season.
