Lando Norris endured a bitter end to his Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The McLaren driver was forced to retire after a chain-reaction collision involving Alpine duo Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly on the Safety Car restart at the Baku City Circuit.
The incident began when Colapinto locked up attempting to dive inside Gasly at Turn 1. The Argentine's Alpine slammed into Gasly, who then careered into Norris's MCL40, sending the Briton into the barriers. Norris was furious.
“I think the FIA should be more strict and start handing out bans for this kind of stuff,” Norris told media including Motorsport Week. “It’s just careless from people. It costs a lot of money, all my parts are in the bin now. People should just get banned from driving, that [rule] deserves to be in Formula 1.”
Norris also insisted that such errors are unacceptable among drivers considered the best in the world. “George can do what he wants. In Formula 1 I think you expect drivers to anticipate things,” he added. “Grip is going to be low, tyre temps are low; they weren’t even that low. In Formula 1 we want to be against the best drivers in the world when stuff like this happens. It shouldn’t be there.”
The Safety Car restart itself was chaotic as Russell backed the pack up, but Norris refused to blame that for Colapinto's mistake. He maintained that the incident was purely down to driver error.
As a result, Norris has fallen further behind in the championship, now trailing leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 116 points. The race was won by George Russell, who held off Max Verstappen.
The incident has reignited the debate over penalty standards in F1. Norris's call for race bans may prompt discussions among stewards and the FIA. Will they take tougher action? Only time will tell.
