Lando Norris has completed a rare non-F1 test by driving McLaren's MCL-HY hypercar at Portimao, keeping the door wide open for a future Le Mans 24 Hours appearance.
The reigning Formula 1 world champion racked up 38 laps at the Portuguese circuit, running through a development programme to provide feedback to the team. He was joined by McLaren factory driver Mikkel Jensen and Laurens Vanthoor, who will join the outfit in 2027.
This test marked Norris's first proper outing in a non-F1 car in years, following his previous run in the MCL-HY at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The opportunity arose after he expressed strong interest in driving the hypercar again.
"First of all, a big thanks to the McLaren Hypercar Team for letting me drive the MCL-HY," said Norris. "It was great for them to give me a chance to have a bit of fun and try something new, particularly during their busy preparations for next year."
Norris also noted that he hoped to bring a different perspective to the team. "I think we also collected some valuable data, and I hope I was able to bring a different set of feelings, comments, and perspectives on things, which is useful for the team in this crucial testing period."
Norris's involvement in McLaren's hypercar project strengthens the ties between the team's F1 and WEC programmes, and it paves the way for the British driver to one day compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours, an ambition he has openly admitted.
Ian James, McLaren WEC team principal, welcomed Norris's contribution. "We are all racers at McLaren Racing, and competing in Formula 1, IndyCar and the World Endurance Championship creates exciting cross-series opportunities," said James. "Lando was keen to drive the MCL-HY beyond his Goodwood Hill run, so we invited him to join our private Portimao test. As we fully expected, he adapted very quickly and provided valuable feedback to support the car's development."
The test also served as an evaluation for McLaren as they gear up for their WEC debut next year. Norris's presence in the cockpit offered a fresh perspective from an F1 driver accustomed to competing at the highest level.
While his main focus remains with McLaren in F1, this move could open the door for further collaboration in the future. With the Le Mans door ajar, fans may one day see Norris racing in the legendary endurance event.
