Nissan is bringing autonomous driving technology to the streets of Cambridge, UK, to explore how self-driving cars can improve people's mobility. The Japanese automaker announced a project called ADventure, a £3 million initiative supported by the UK government and developed with Warwick Manufacturing Group.
The project goes beyond vehicle technology, aiming to trial a real autonomous mobility service. Nissan is working with local authorities, commuters, and residents to understand how autonomous driving can make travel more accessible and meet community needs—for example, helping non-drivers get to medical appointments.
Why Cambridge?
After a rigorous evaluation, Cambridge was chosen for its reputation and expertise as a leading UK hub for transport innovation and autonomous mobility research. Three main goals: design mobility services for cities and communities, build passenger trust, and test the technology in real-world conditions.
For testing, Nissan uses a vehicle based on the 2022 LEAF, already used in previous UK research projects. It will be equipped with Nissan's advanced autonomous driving technology and will assess passengers' potential mobility needs while gathering data from real-world conditions.
This move signals Nissan's serious commitment to future mobility, not just in labs but directly in communities.
