A major step forward in future mobility innovation has been announced by Japanese manufacturer Nissan, detailing its driverless pilot vehicle program for the fiscal year 2026. Centered in the Nada Gogo area of Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, the company has officially opened registrations for individuals eager to experience the service firsthand. According to the manufacturer, this program represents the next phase of its autonomous mobility services project, building directly upon the positive results gathered from field tests conducted throughout the fiscal year 2025.
Compared to the previous phase, Nissan has expanded its operational area while introducing a brand-new ride-booking and on-demand vehicle dispatch function, all conveniently accessible via smartphone. This latest phase utilizes Level 2 autonomous driving vehicles based on the Nissan Serena van. The initiative is designed to evaluate how autonomous transport can enhance visitor mobility, foster greater social acceptance, and actively contribute to regional revitalization. The automaker aims to launch a paid service next year, paving the way for full commercial operations within the Nada Gogo area by 2030.
The ambition does not stop there, as the movement of Level 2 autonomous vehicles operating across both Yokohama and Kobe will be monitored in real-time. This oversight is managed by Nissan's dedicated Remote Operations Center located in Yokohama. By validating a centralized system capable of monitoring multiple operational zones from a single headquarters, the company aims to optimize future mobility service efficiency while minimizing organizational impact on local communities where these services are introduced.

A diverse array of entities has been enlisted to ensure the success of this comprehensive project. Kobe City oversees the general coordination of the initiative, while the Nada Gogo Sake Brewers Association provides designated passenger pick-up and drop-off points while exploring potential integrations between autonomous mobility services and local sake-brewing businesses. Furthermore, Moplus manages operational support and service model development, alongside Nissan, which spearheads program planning, management, and the provision and operation of the autonomous vehicles.
