The young Italian talent has completely shattered pre-season expectations, which initially favored his garage partner George Russell following his victory in Australia, by seizing control of the championship through sheer pace and determination.
The extraordinary level of performance displayed by the Italian youngster has prompted former world champion Nico Rosberg to deliver high praise, drawing a prestigious comparison to Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher. Speaking exclusively to RTL and Sky Sport Deutschland, the 2016 titleholder highlighted how the 2006-born driver has completely transformed his execution on the track compared to his struggles last season.
Rosberg, who has monitored Antonelli's trajectory since their shared days in karting competitions, admitted that few could have predicted such a dominant surge to the front of the pack after a challenging rookie introduction. This unique consistency has set him apart from the rest of the grid.
"Sapevo che fosse molto, molto veloce, lo conosco dai tempi dei go-kart, ma dopo l'anno scorso, in cui ha faticato moltissimo, nessuno avrebbe mai pensato che quest'anno avrebbe guidato cosi. Ha guidato a livelli da Michael Schumacher. E l'unico che rimane costantemente nelle prime posizioni, gli altri commettono errori e sono ora lenti, ora veloci, ora lenti. Antonelli invece e stato sempre lassu e si merita pienamente questo titolo che nessuno puo togliergli," Rosberg noted, emphasizing the driver's unmatched racing composure.
Despite bestowing such high acclaim upon the rising Italian star, Rosberg maintained that Max Verstappen retains the status of the absolute best driver currently competing. He stressed that as soon as Red Bull provides him with a championship-winning car, the Dutch champion will undoubtedly return to dominating the sport.
