NASCAR has officially confirmed that the race at the San Diego naval base will return in 2027. This continues the success of the inaugural edition held this year, which received an outstanding response from fans and the US military.
Unlike the previous edition held on Father's Day weekend in June, the race will be moved to July 31-August 2 (Australian time). This change makes the race at Coronado Circuit, which is the longest track on the NASCAR calendar at 5.4 kilometers, part of the five-race NASCAR In-Season Challenge.
This year, Corey Heim from 23XI Racing won the main NASCAR Cup Series race, while Austin Hill from Richard Childress Racing was fastest in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series. These wins proved that this road course can deliver exciting and competitive racing.
NASCAR San Diego President Amy Lupo expressed gratitude for the support. "What we experienced this year—the incredible racing, the energy from our fans, and the partnership with the U.S. Navy and the San Diego community—showed just how special this event can be," she said. "We are committed to improving the experience for fans and creating an unforgettable weekend that celebrates the San Diego region, NASCAR, and most importantly, the brave sailors who serve our country."
Additionally, NASCAR and the US Department of War have agreed to visit other military bases starting in 2028 as part of a rotation program. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth emphasized that this partnership provides a unique national platform to honor service members and strengthen ties with military families. "Our vision is bigger than a single race or location. By bringing this event to different military installations in the years ahead, we can reach more service members across the country and build an enduring tradition that celebrates courage, commitment, and elite performance," he explained.
NASCAR Chief Operating Officer Ben Kennedy added that the response from the government has been very positive. "He (Pete Hegseth) obviously loved the event and enjoyed it, and that helped spur conversations about what the future relationship might look like," said Kennedy. "We agreed in 2028 to go to another military installation as part of a long-term plan. There is still much to decide regarding locations, but the team has already been exploring several priority markets."
