Legendary football manager Jose Mourinho took time to share his thoughts on Formula 1 amid his duties with Real Madrid. After guiding his team to a 4-1 demolition of Rayo Vallecano in La Liga, Mourinho visited the F1 paddock in Madrid. There, he heaped praise on Kimi Antonelli, who currently leads the drivers' championship.
"What [Kimi Antonelli] is doing with Mercedes is incredible; it's an absolutely incredible thing," Mourinho said. The praise is well-deserved. Antonelli, the young Italian driver, holds a 66-point lead over his Mercedes teammate George Russell. In qualifying for the Madrid Grand Prix, Antonelli secured second place on the grid, while Russell had to settle for sixth. With a substantial points gap and consistent performance, Antonelli is in a strong position to extend his margin.
Mourinho, known as 'The Special One', has a keen interest in racing. Last year, he was even asked to hand the pole position award to Max Verstappen at the British Grand Prix. This time, however, his attention also turned to veteran driver Fernando Alonso. "Without a car to win, and practically without a car for points, I'm also friends with Fernando. I really like his personality. I like that he's always among the best, even when they give him a car that isn't good," he added.
Mourinho's praise for Alonso comes amid speculation about the Spaniard's future. FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem is reportedly in talks with Alonso to convince him to stay in F1. Alonso has yet to commit to either Aston Martin or the championship itself. Mourinho, while avoiding specifics, expressed his admiration for Alonso.
During his paddock visit, Mourinho was also careful not to offend anyone. "I have to be careful because all of them are very nice to me. They all invite me here and there," he said with a smile. Mourinho's presence at the Madrid F1 paddock added a unique flavor, especially as he is a highly respected figure in the sports world.
With the race approaching, the spotlight remains on Antonelli, who could extend his lead, and Alonso, who is still the center of attention. Mourinho himself will likely continue to follow F1, though his main duties with Real Madrid remain a priority. The combination of football and motorsport in one weekend in Madrid is proof of how captivating the world of sports is for fans.
