Rising geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region have prompted MotoGP riders to take extraordinary measures during the Australian Grand Prix weekend. According to paddock sources reported by The-Race, the premier class grid held a clandestine meeting on Thursday evening at Phillip Island to vote on whether they were prepared to race at Lusail in Qatar in a fortnight amid escalating safety concerns.
The closed-door gathering yielded a stark result, with two-thirds of the attending riders reportedly voting against traveling to Qatar. The growing discontent stems from mounting security risks and government travel advisories following previous hostilities involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, which had already caused severe logistical disruption when the paddock returned from the season-opener in Thailand back in March.
Despite the initial rescheduling from early April to November, series bosses have remained steadfast in their intention to proceed with the event. Management issued fresh guidance to teams stating their goal remains to head straight from Sepang to Lusail as planned next month. MotoGP deputy CEO Carlos Ezpeleta previously emphasized that safety and wellbeing are the top priorities while monitoring developments closely alongside team representatives and promoters.

However, despite a fragile truce holding since April, anxieties have heightened ahead of the US midterm elections coinciding with the Qatar race week. Recent political warnings and embassy evacuations have compounded unease within the paddock, leaving many competitors questioning the viability of the Gulf trip. While most riders declined to comment extensively in public and deferred to series organizers, Alex Marquez offered a remarkably candid assessment of the situation to the press.
Speaking on the matter, the Spanish rider admitted that circumstances change daily and appear increasingly complex, casting doubt on official assurances that the situation is entirely under control. He urged championship organizers to adopt a realistic stance in the coming days, balancing commercial interests with the undeniable safety realities faced by every team member in the paddock.
