The Mandalika race weekend perfectly encapsulated the intensity of the 2026 MotoGP season, as one title contender exceeded expectations while their rival squandered crucial championship points. The Indonesian Grand Prix delivered two completely different races from the same starting grid, ironically just days after MotoGP announced the introduction of a second qualifying session for every weekend starting in 2027.
This dynamic meant that both Aprilia and Ducati secured a win apiece in Mandalika, keeping the championship battle finely poised ahead of the trip to Australia in a fortnight. The contrasting results between the Sprint and the main Grand Prix made it fascinating to evaluate who truly gained and who lost during the intense Indonesian weekend.
Aprilia etched their name in the history books by locking out the top four positions in a premier class race for the very first time. Marco Bezzecchi produced his finest performance in months to claim victory, while Raul Fernandez delivered a heroic ride despite racing with a broken finger, complemented by strong charges from Jorge Martin and Ai Ogura.

However, Aprilia's weekend cannot be judged solely on Sunday's heroics, as Saturday's Sprint proved to be a nightmare for the Noale factory following an opening-lap collision between their riders. Jorge Martin also suffered a setback after dropping out of the lead due to a tyre pressure issue before making a costly mistake while battling championship rival Marc Marquez.
According to Motorsport.com, Aprilia can ultimately take great satisfaction from holding a 12-point advantage over Ducati in the constructors' standings after arriving level on points. Yet, they remain fully aware that their historic Sunday triumph followed a Sprint where potential victory slipped through their fingers.
