The 2026 Catalunya MotoGP at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya descended into one of the most chaotic races of the season after two separate red flags interrupted the grand prix.

The first major incident happened on lap 12 when Pedro Acosta suffered a technical issue on his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine along the back straight.

As Acosta raised his hand to warn riders behind him, his KTM suddenly slowed and was clipped from behind by Alex Marquez.

The heavy contact sent Marquez off line before he crashed heavily at high speed, with his Gresini Racing Ducati destroyed in multiple cartwheels through the run-off area.

Debris from the crash also collected several other riders, including Fabio Di Giannantonio, Raul Fernandez, and Johann Zarco.

Race direction immediately deployed the red flag for safety reasons, while Alex Marquez received trackside medical attention before being transferred to hospital for further examination.

Following circuit clean-up procedures, the race restarted over a reduced 13-lap distance using the classification from the end of lap 11.

However, further drama unfolded only moments after the second start.

This time Johann Zarco crashed heavily into Turn 1 after becoming involved in an incident with Pecco Bagnaia and Luca Marini.

Zarco appeared to become trapped against the rear wheel of Bagnaia’s Ducati before riders and machines scattered through the gravel trap.

All three riders were reported conscious, with Bagnaia and Marini seen walking away from the scene. Bagnaia was later spotted using an ice pack on his arm.

MotoGP officials later confirmed that Zarco had been taken to the medical centre for additional checks following the second red flag.

The second restart was eventually scheduled over 12 laps, matching Sprint Race distance, with all riders from the first restart technically eligible except Alex Marquez and Enea Bastianini.

Two red flags in a single MotoGP grand prix once again highlighted the extreme intensity and danger of modern MotoGP starts in the current era of advanced aerodynamics and ride-height devices.
