The 2026 Catalunya MotoGP at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya descended into chaos after two separate incidents forced race control to deploy two red flags during the grand prix.

The opening incident happened shortly after the start when Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta made heavy contact at the front of the field.

The crash immediately brought the race to a halt as Alex Marquez required medical attention in the run-off area following the high-impact incident.

Marshals and medical crews quickly entered the circuit, while race direction decided to suspend the race with a red flag for safety reasons.

The incident represented a major blow for Gresini Racing and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, with both riders considered strong victory contenders heading into Sunday’s race.

After the track was cleared and a restart procedure was completed, further drama unfolded only moments into the second start.

This time the incident involved Johann Zarco, Pecco Bagnaia, and Luca Marini.

Heavy contact in the middle of the pack triggered a chain-reaction crash which left debris and carbon fragments scattered across the corner.

Race control once again had no option but to display a second red flag to ensure circuit conditions were safe before continuing the grand prix.

The dramatic sequence completely transformed the complexion of the Catalunya MotoGP, with several leading contenders eliminated before the race could settle into a normal rhythm.

Two red flags in a single MotoGP grand prix also marked one of the most dramatic moments of the 2026 season so far, once again highlighting the intensity of modern MotoGP starts in the current aerodynamic and ride-height device era.

FIM officials and MotoGP stewards are expected to fully investigate both incidents following the race.
