MotoGP 2027 Season Launch to Be Held in Rio de Janeiro

MotoGP has announced that its 2027 season launch event will move to a third new location in as many years, with Rio de Janeiro set to host the festivities in February. Following the success of Bangkok in 2025 and Kuala Lumpur in 2026, Brazil now gets its turn to welcome the championship's official curtain-raiser.

The decision comes as a surprise, as rumors had pointed to Miami as a potential venue. Instead, MotoGP has chosen Rio, which will host the event on 21 February at Botafogo Beach, with the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain as a backdrop.

The choice is not coincidental, given MotoGP's successful return to Brazil this year in Goiania. Despite some issues with the track surface, the passion of Brazilian fans was undeniable, with a sold-out crowd. That enthusiasm provided a strong case for bringing the launch event to the country.

Carmelo Ezpeleta, MotoGP Group CEO, stated, "The MotoGP Season Launch has become one of the defining moments of the year for our championship, bringing together every team, rider and manufacturer as we begin a new season. The enthusiasm shown by Brazilian fans during our sold-out return to Goiania in 2026 confirmed the extraordinary connection between MotoGP and Brazil."

Rio's mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, also welcomed the news. "Rio de Janeiro is honoured to host the MotoGP 2027 Season Launch and welcome one of the most important annual events in international motorsport to our city," he said. "From Botafogo Beach to Christ the Redeemer, this event will showcase the very best of Rio de Janeiro to millions of fans around the world."

However, MotoGP has yet to reveal the full 2027 calendar and test dates, with only the season-opening Thai Grand Prix on 5-7 March confirmed so far. Typically, the launch event is placed somewhere logistically convenient for teams, and Rio may serve as a strategic hub ahead of pre-season testing in the region.

This move to Rio underscores MotoGP's ambition to expand its global reach and deliver unique experiences for fans. After Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, it's now Rio's turn to set the stage for a new season. The question remains: will this be the most spectacular launch yet, as Ezpeleta promises?
