Dorna and Liberty Media have officially unveiled the brand new weekend format that will reshape the MotoGP World Championship starting from the 2027 season. The most prominent novelty of this regulatory overhaul is the introduction of a dedicated qualifying session specifically tailored for the Sprint race, alongside shifting the traditional warm-up session to a slot immediately preceding the Grand Prix start.
According to the newly established schedule, Friday's action will kick off with Free Practice 1 for 45 minutes, followed by Free Practice 2 for 30 minutes, and concluded by a 15-minute Sprint Qualifying session to determine the starting grid for the Saturday short race. This structure allows teams and riders a substantial amount of practice time before heading straight into competitive pressure.
Moving on to Saturday, the schedule features a brief 20-minute Free Practice 3 session, which is immediately followed by a 15-minute Q1 session involving all riders on the grid. This serves as the gateway to the 15-minute Q2 session contested by the top 12 riders to determine the ultimate Grand Prix grid positions, leading up to the afternoon Sprint race.

On Sunday, riders will be given a concise 10-minute window just before the race start to gauge the exact track conditions. As reported by FormulaPassion, moving the warm-up session closer to the race start is a highly sensible choice, particularly in mixed track conditions, even though it strips teams of the opportunity to test major setups and analyze them beforehand.
Nevertheless, this new format harbors a significant trap regarding potential impeding penalties and yellow flags. With only 15 minutes allocated for both the Sprint Qualifying and Q1 sessions with 22 bikes pushing simultaneously on track, traffic management will become extremely critical and could heavily influence the outcome of these qualifying sessions.
