The 2027 MotoGP season will mark a new era with technical regulations introduced for manufacturers committed to staying through 2031. This major shift has triggered the most significant grid overhaul in years. As of now, nearly all rider seats are filled, leaving only two spots unconfirmed, both within the Honda camp.
Contracts began to be announced in late June. The first major move came from Marc Marquez, who signed a two-year extension with Ducati, officially announced on June 23. Ducati then confirmed the departure of Francesco Bagnaia and signed Pedro Acosta just hours later. This reshaped the competitive landscape, with Acosta now partnering Marquez at the factory team.
Aprilia moved early by extending Marco Bezzecchi's contract in February, then announced Bagnaia's signing during the Dutch GP weekend. This created a solid all-Italian lineup, aiming for top contention. Meanwhile, Yamaha confirmed its factory riders on July 1, with Jorge Martin and Ai Ogura as the mainstays, after releasing Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins.
KTM was in no rush, but on July 6 they confirmed the arrivals of Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio. Honda was the last to move, announcing the signing of Moto2 rider David Alonso on July 21, though it has not yet decided whether he will race for the factory team or LCR. This decision will determine the final grid spot, with Diogo Moreira and Alonso as the main candidates.
With only two seats left, the battle for the Honda factory ride is the center of attention. Alonso, who impressed in Moto2, and Moreira, who has shown potential, will compete fiercely. Honda's decision will not only affect its internal lineup but also the balance of power in MotoGP 2027. If Alonso moves up, LCR will likely take Moreira, or vice versa.
This major reshuffle signals a new dynamic in MotoGP, with manufacturers racing to build the strongest teams for the new regulation era. With contracts nearly finalized, the 2027 season is set to be one of the most competitive in history.
