Major overhauls to the MotoGP weekend format ahead of the 2027 season have sparked intense discussions within the paddock on the eve of the Indonesian Grand Prix. Particular attention has been drawn to the new qualifying structure and the removal of the traditional Sunday morning warm-up session. In response to the growing debate, Carlos Ezpeleta, the Deputy CEO of MotoGP, has stepped forward to defend the sweeping alterations.
Starting in 2027, the weekend schedule will undergo a complete transformation. Friday will feature a standalone qualifying session exclusively determining the starting grid for the Sprint race. Saturday will then host a second qualifying session to set the grid for Sunday's main Grand Prix. Consequently, current practice sessions where lap times dictate direct advancement into Q2 will be entirely eliminated.
According to Carlos Ezpeleta, these modifications were not unilaterally imposed by the championship organizers. Instead, the updates are the direct result of comprehensive consultations involving all competing teams and manufacturers within the paddock.
“The proposal came from the teams and manufacturers themselves,” stated Carlos Ezpeleta, emphasizing that the development of the new format heavily prioritized rider workload management and improved risk mitigation strategies on track.
A critical component of this framework is the strict separation between free practice and qualifying sessions. The opening Friday practice will run for 45 minutes, followed by a 30-minute second session, freeing riders from the relentless pressure of chasing single lap times and allowing teams to concentrate purely on machine setup and electronics.
