MotoGP 2027 850cc Bikes Will Be Less Physical and More Fun

Ahead of a major regulatory overhaul taking effect in 2027, MotoGP riders have shared their latest impressions regarding the next-generation 850cc prototypes. Based on ongoing development and early tests, riders agree that these new machines are noticeably lighter and far less physically demanding than the current 1000cc bikes, delivering a much more enjoyable overall experience on the track.

The primary goals behind the upcoming ruleset are to curb top speeds and make the championship more sustainable over the long term. However, the 850cc machines will also feature vastly different characteristics compared to the equipment riders are currently accustomed to, driven by a smaller displacement engine, a brand-new chassis philosophy, reduced reliance on aggressive aerodynamics, and a switch to Pirelli tyres.

For KTM test rider Pol Espargaro, the 2027 technical regulations represent a massive step in the correct direction. He felt that the heavy aerodynamic packages on modern bikes placed excessive physical strain on competitors. Elaborating on the differences between the two engine specifications, he pointed out distinct handling traits and tyre characteristics.

“I would choose the 850. The 1000cc bike is super physical. I feel it’s more dangerous because it's much more powerful,” Espargaro stated. He explained that current tyres must be constructed with extremely hard rubber compounds to withstand high torque output throughout an entire race distance, making the current generation intensely demanding. In contrast, the 850cc package transforms the dynamic entirely, making the bike easier, lighter, and fully compatible with softer tyres.

Meanwhile, former premier-class regular turned test rider Takaaki Nakagami highlighted the manufacturer shift from Michelin to Pirelli as a pivotal change for 2027. Asked if he finds the new 850cc prototypes more entertaining to pilot, he expressed clear enthusiasm for the upcoming mechanical package.

“For me, yes, I like it more than the 1000cc. I do not have to think about the rear height device, so it's more simple. Also, the size of the aerodynamics is a little bit smaller. Still, we have aero, we have to use all these parts. But the bike is a little bit more naturally pitching. I like it. I enjoy it a lot,” Nakagami concluded.
