The #1 Toyota Supra was promptly parked as a precaution, with the team electing to rotate its four drivers through Ryan Wood's #2 entry for the remainder of the day.
A Walkinshaw TWG Racing representative told Speedcafe that a problem was detected in the telemetry data early on, and while the engine continued to run, the decision was made to avoid any risk of further damage. The team's swift action underscores the growing concern over reliability in the Supercars paddock.
This latest issue follows Chaz Mostert's retirement from the final race at Ipswich Super440 due to a bottom end bearing failure. As a result, all four Toyotas running the revised B-spec engine reverted to the A-spec for Tuesday's pre-enduro test. Interestingly, Macauley Jones was the only Supra driver to complete the Ipswich round with the A-spec motor.
The technical gremlins have not been kind to other teams either. Grove Racing's Matt Payne saw his Sprint Cup hopes dashed at Ipswich after a major valve train failure, while Broc Feeney of Triple Eight also suffered an engine-related problem at the end of Tuesday's enduro test, forcing an overnight engine change.
With the Enduro Cup looming, teams are under pressure to find reliability. Mostert will be joined by Kiwi veteran Fabian Coulthard for the endurance races, while Wood teams up with Jaxon Evans. Meanwhile, Will Brown's winless Triple Eight Mustang is back on track, aiming to turn their season around.
