The engine failure that struck Chaz Mostert during Sunday's Supercars race has forced Walkinshaw Andretti United into a full forensic investigation. Mostert's Supra ground to a halt mid-race due to an as-yet-unidentified engine problem, adding another chapter to Toyota's ongoing reliability woes this season.
What makes this failure particularly concerning is that Mostert was running the new B-spec engine, which Walkinshaw had hoped would resolve the reliability issues seen across the entire Toyota fleet. Instead of providing a solution, the fresh engine has once again failed, raising serious questions about the technical direction of the Japanese manufacturer.
The Walkinshaw crew removed the engine from Mostert's car on Sunday night and shipped it to the Supercars engine shop in Brisbane for a full examination on Monday. The investigation involves both Walkinshaw's technical team and Supercars officials, aiming to uncover the root cause in meticulous detail.
“We will do a complete forensic strip down of the engine tomorrow alongside Supercars,” Walkinshaw CEO Bruce Stewart told Speedcafe. “We won’t speculate on what it may be until that’s complete. The message from us doesn’t change. We will continue to throw every resource possible at this to continue to improve the package.”
The engine is scheduled to be back in Mostert's car for Tuesday's pre-enduro test, which will provide another important bank of miles for the new-spec Toyota V8s. With a tight schedule, the team hopes the forensic investigation will quickly shed light on the issue to prevent a recurrence in the future.
This failure is a major blow for Toyota as they strive to close the gap to their rivals. Stewart emphasized the team's unwavering spirit: “We are a people driven team, it hurts everyone, but no one is giving up, we’re determined to solve it.”
