Juan Pablo Montoya has questioned Max Verstappen’s recovery from a spin during the Miami Grand Prix 2026, arguing the moment was driven more by luck than technical skill. The comments triggered a debate with former F1 driver and analyst Jolyon Palmer during post-race analysis.
Verstappen executed a full 360-degree spin on the opening lap while battling Charles Leclerc for the lead. The Red Bull Racing driver dropped from second to ninth before recovering to finish fifth, marking his strongest result of the season.
From a technical perspective, Palmer argued that Verstappen’s ability to recover the car demonstrated exceptional control. He highlighted how the Dutch driver managed braking, steering inputs, and clutch timing within a narrow recovery window while the car rotated.

“He’s got such a skill set at spinning cars and getting them pointed in the right direction again.”
Montoya, however, disagreed with the assessment. The former Williams and McLaren driver argued that once throttle input is released, the car naturally slows its rotation, making the recovery more dependent on circumstance than talent.
“You think that’s talent? I thought it was pure luck.”
Palmer responded by referencing similar incidents involving Verstappen at Silverstone and Hockenheim in previous seasons. According to him, Verstappen’s repeated ability to minimise time loss after spins suggests a level of precision beyond coincidence.
“You only have a very small angle out of 360 degrees for the car to point straight again. Max keeps doing it time and time again.”
Technically, recovering from a spin in modern Formula 1 machinery depends heavily on grip distribution, throttle response, and the timing of driver inputs. With current ground effect cars being highly sensitive to balance changes, maintaining momentum after losing control has become increasingly complex.
The debate illustrates how interpretations of driver skill can differ even among former Formula 1 competitors. Regardless of the controversy, Verstappen still managed to maximise his Miami result and maintain his position in the leading championship group ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix.
