Miedecke Motorsport has declared its readiness to explore a collaboration with Ford for the Bathurst 12 Hour, following an impressive debut at the Suzuka 6 Hours. The Australia-based team was entrusted by Ford to field a Mustang GT3 at the second round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge (IGTC) at Suzuka, Japan, last weekend.
As the official distributor for Ford Racing and Multimatic in Australia, Miedecke Motorsport has a close relationship with the blue oval manufacturer. That relationship led Ford to task them with running a Pro class entry at Suzuka. George Miedecke, who leads the team, then enlisted Troy Russell and Melbourne Performance Centre (MPC) to bring the project to life.
Preparation was intense. The car, bought back by Ford from Tony Quinn, arrived in Melbourne from Brisbane just days before being shipped to Nagoya. The team completed part of the EVO upgrade in Australia and the rest in Japan. “They came to us and said 'we want to do this. How do we make it happen?' And we made it happen,” said Miedecke.
“We did about 20 percent of the upgrade at MPC. The rest was done in Japan. Not enough was made of the effort MPC put in over that week in Japan. I think there were three 1:00am finishes, just thrashing to get it happening. They worked really hard and did a fantastic job,” he added. The upgrade involved major changes such as steering racks and suspension, demanding extra work.
Under the Miedecke Motorsport by Team MPC banner, the trio of pro drivers Christopher Mies, Dennis Olsen, and Frederic Vervisch impressed. They secured pole position and finished second after 6 hours and 30 minutes of racing. Victory went to Absolute Racing with their Porsche 911 GT3 R driven by Alessio Picariello, Laurin Heinrich, and Julien Andlauer.
Despite missing out on the win, Miedecke praised his team's execution. “I think Porsche played the BOP game very well and their cars were certainly very fast. For me, the professionalism of the execution was key. They didn't leave anything on the table. All three drivers were harmonious and not peacocking. They executed the whole weekend,” he explained.
Now, the big question is whether Ford will ask Miedecke Motorsport and MPC to facilitate a Bathurst 12 Hour entry. Previously, Ford entered the Mount Panorama race with German squad Haupt Racing Team after Triple Eight declined due to Supercars commitments. Miedecke expressed his readiness if called upon. “We're ready if Ford wants to do it. We have a good relationship and we've shown what we can do,” he concluded.
