Mercedes has finally played its ace. After biding its time, the Brackley-based team unveiled a new aerodynamic package for the W17 at the Bahrain Grand Prix held at Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia. This is the first major change since the Canadian GP in May, and the design immediately turned heads as the covers came off in the pit lane.
The W17 itself has been the benchmark in the 2026 season. The Mercedes power unit has dominated, winning 14 out of 15 races so far. However, behind the engine's brilliance, one weakness remains: performance in slow corners. Exiting slow turns, the car often loses traction compared to its rivals. This is where the upgrade plays a key role.
A Bold Sidepod Design
The most striking change is in the sidepod area. Mercedes has opted for a radically different design, with an aggressive ramp angled towards the rear axle. The goal is clear: channel as much air as possible to the rear without disturbing the overall balance. This is not just a cosmetic tweak, but a serious attempt to improve the car's characteristics that have been unfriendly in slow corners.

Interestingly, the FIA has declared the Sepang weekend a Heat Hazard. The Malaysian heat is indeed scorching, and Mercedes has anticipated this with modifications to the bodywork gills. This allows for better air circulation for cooling, ensuring the engine and components work optimally despite the extreme weather.
Extensive Floor Revisions
Not just the sidepods, the W17's floor has also undergone extensive revisions. These changes work in tandem with the new airflow concept from the sidepods, allowing Mercedes to increase overall downforce without sacrificing aerodynamic efficiency. This means the car can stick to the track better without adding the drag that usually reduces straight-line speed.
According to internal sources, the downforce gain could be as high as four percent. A significant figure in F1, where every percent counts. With Sepang's layout featuring two long straights and fast-flowing corner complexes, the circuit is the perfect venue to test Mercedes' latest innovation.
This move also signals that Mercedes is not content to rely solely on its power unit advantage. They want to ensure the W17 chassis is competitive in all types of corners. If successful, it's not impossible that their dominance in both championships—drivers' and constructors'—will become even more unchallenged.
The decision to bring a major upgrade mid-season shows Mercedes' ambition to keep developing. Other teams like Red Bull and Ferrari will certainly not sit idle. The competition in the remainder of the season is predicted to be even fiercer, and Sepang will be the first stage to see if this upgrade truly pays off.
