Andrea Kimi Antonelli's victory at the Spanish Grand Prix has become a talking point, and now Mercedes has revealed the role of 'secret codes' that helped the young Italian make a crucial decision under pressure. Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin explained how the team prepares its drivers for potential race neutralisations, including the use of codes that are changed every week.
The incident began when Lance Stroll stopped on track, triggering yellow flags. Antonelli, running second, significantly backed off through Turns 18 to 20, losing more time than the cars around him, including Lando Norris and Max Verstappen. However, that decision proved key. His race engineer, Peter Bonnington, had warned him that a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) might be deployed, prompting him to deliberately slow down to 'catch' the neutralisation before reaching the pit entry.
Speaking on the NU Silver Arrows Radio Show podcast, Shovlin revealed that Mercedes uses secret codes to give drivers an idea of whether they might want to pit during a safety car. "Well, we will use secret codes to give them an idea of whether they might want to come in on a safety car during the race. But we try not to let all the other teams know what those codes are. So, we change them every single week," he explained. These codes are relayed over the radio, and in Antonelli's case, Bonnington's message contained a coded instruction that triggered swift action.
After the yellow flag was confirmed, Bonnington told Antonelli: "Yellow, yellow, 19-20," before adding, "So, a big lift." Moments later, he said, "You are in safety car window." With the VSC deployed, the call to pit came. Antonelli was extremely close to the pit entry when race control deployed the VSC. While he might still have made it in without slowing, the extra second gained made all the difference. "And if you watch the onboard from Kimi's car, you'll see that Kimi getting in was not an easy thing. And you'll see that as he was pulling up in the pit box, the tyres were arriving as he was stopping. So, it was a difficult stop to execute in that time frame," Shovlin added.
This victory not only marks a stellar performance from Antonelli but also showcases Mercedes' strategic ingenuity. The Brackley-based team perfectly exploited the neutralisation, something that often decides races in F1. The success is also proof that thorough preparation and effective communication between pitwall and driver can change the final outcome.
For Antonelli, this is his first F1 win, and he did it in impressive style. The 18-year-old is now increasingly considered a force on the grid, and Mercedes seems to have found a new gem. Meanwhile, rivals like Red Bull Racing and McLaren must be wary, as Mercedes continues to show improved performance.
