Mercedes will honour one of its team members who passed away last week at this weekend's Dutch Grand Prix. Ahead of Formula 1's return from the summer break at Zandvoort, the Brackley-based squad revealed that Kath Goodall, a member of their crew, had died.
As a mark of respect, Kath's name will be carried on both W17 cars throughout the race weekend. In an official statement, Mercedes remembered Kath as a kind, professional individual who had a positive impact on those around her. “She will be greatly missed by all who knew her,” the team said in a release on Thursday.
This moment serves as a reminder that behind the glamour of racing, there is a close-knit family supporting each other. The decision to carry Kath's name on the car is a touching gesture, showing that every team member matters in the German manufacturer's garage.
On the sporting side, team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged that the competition is getting fiercer. “Our rivals have reduced the performance gap, and we know the second half of the year will demand more from us than the first,” he said. Wolff stressed that championships will be decided by execution and the rate of development over the remaining 12 races.
“Whilst we are slightly out of step with upgrades compared to our rivals, we have more performance to unlock and a clear development plan to do so,” added Wolff, also highlighting the importance of consistency in the rest of the season.
Currently, Andrea Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers' championship by 50 points over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, thanks to six wins in 11 races. Mercedes holds a 72-point advantage over Ferrari in the constructors' standings. The pressure to maintain their positions is mounting, especially with rivals improving their form.
