Amid the disappointment of the Zandvoort weekend, Red Bull had one major reason to celebrate: Max Verstappen‘s signature on a new deal keeping him until 2030. But behind the persistent exit rumors, the French team boss revealed a surprising truth.
Speaking to F1.com, Laurent Mekies said the Dutchman never wavered. “Max always said he wanted to stay. From the first talks to the last, the message was the same. When everything was done, he just said, ‘I told you I wanted to stay!’” Mekies said, also highlighting how the team grew closer through shared ambition.
Despite the RB22’s lackluster start, Mekies sees frustration as fuel. “We have one goal: winning. So when we don’t win, we are brutally honest with each other. That’s what gets us out of bed,” he asserted, responding to Verstappen’s frequent radio criticism.
The new contract signals a long-term commitment between Red Bull and Verstappen. The question now: can they regain dominance in 2026’s new regulations?
